The sport of soccer is still classified within the "Moderate Risk" category in the State of Massachusetts youth sports guidelines. While competitive soccer games are allowed, modifications to rules aimed at limiting contact must be in place. Massachusetts Youth Soccer (MYSA), the governing soccer body we fall under as a youth soccer organization in Massachusetts, issued guidance on modifications to be considered for games. Some include masks to be worn by all players and participants, no throw ins, corner kicks on the ground and not in the box, no walls on free kicks, and no slide tackling, Limiting shoulder to shoulder contact is also recommended and possibly eliminating goalie punts.
These significant modifications, several towns not participating, another grouping of towns with wavering commitment and how to handle playing games in "red" towns according to the State's maps all ultimately led to a decision to NOT move forward with the ECYSA Fall season. You can find additional information from ECYSA on their website.
What's next for LYSC?
There are some options that we are considering as a Board over the upcoming week. Anything we do, however, needs to be within the State COVID guidelines, needs to be registered with MYSA for insurance and liability purposes, needs to take place on permitted fields with the Town and with our COVID plan on file with the Town of Lynnfield Board of Health and Emergency Management group. We will be releasing additional information when available. We ask for your cooperation and patience as we attempt to regroup in the safest manner possible once again for the benefit of our players.
